FedAOA's workshop to know man's best friend better

Residents, AOA members, animal lovers and representatives of People For Animals on Sunday held a meeting to discuss stray-dog problems in Indirapuram. The meeting was held at Indirapuram Habitat Centre, under the aegis of FedAOA, an apex body of apartment owners associations in Ghaziabad.

Residents presented their woes regarding stray dogs in their societies. AOA members present at the meeting also discussed ways to deal with the pressure created by residents on them to get rid of such animals.

Issues such as managing feeding spots and behaviour of residents towards the strays were discussed at length. Animal lovers present at the meeting lauded the initiative, saying such meetings would help break the ice among residents and help everyone better understand the situation. They also said that at times, the animals became an issue of local and in-society politics.

Residents from Shipra Srishti, a society that had recently gone through a turbulent phase due to the alleged killing of a stray dog, also discussed their issues with the PFA members. Sumedha Iyer, president of PFA, said the dogs, just like humans, needed care and love for a healthy state of mind. Chasing them, denying them food and shelter alienated them, which led to aggression.

Rakesh Kumar, general secretary of Amrapali Village, asked what one should do when confronted by an aggressive dog. In response, the PFA members said that in such a case, the dog could be taken away for a fortnight and kept under supervision to calm it down.

Amrish Garg from GC Grand pointed out that he had never faced problems with stray dogs back at his ancestral village. “It is only when I started living in a gated community that I learnt about this stray dog 'menace'," added Garg.

Alok Kumar, patron of FedAOA, said regular workshops would be organised by the FedAOA in coordination with PFA to spread awareness about dog behaviour and bridge the gap between humans and dogs. “With the help of the workshops, parents and children can learn how to behave around stray dogs and understand them,” added Kumar.
