The beginning

Hansika began her career in taekwondo in 2010. Her father, TP Singh, recalls, “She’s a very good athlete. It just so happened that her coach noticed her doing an acrobatic move on the field and advised us to introduce Hansika to martial arts. That’s how she started her formal journey. Would you believe that within three months she had clinched a state-level gold!”

Not surprising, given the champ knows 20 different kicks in taekwondo, which, in the words of her coach, is a tall achievement for any athlete her age.

Hard work... and more hard work

At a time when most students would have difficulty managing just studies, Hansika balances both school and practice. Certainly not easy, says her mother, Ritu.

She adds, “She goes to school in her taekwondo dress and practises before school. After practice, she changes into her school uniform. She comes back from school, finishes her homework and then rushes out for evening training.”

Sometimes, her mother recalls, Hansika didn't have any girl competitor at the district- and school-level competitions in Delhi. “She would just start crying because she wanted to fight so bad. And then, in one event, she fought with the boys and won,” she says proudly.

And what’s Hansika like?

Shy and deeply interested in literature. A student of Class XI at Mount Carmel School, Hansika likes to read in her spare time — and yes, she is also fond of watching martial arts movies. Her stunts at home often have the family despairing. Her mom says, “She roams around the house pulling off difficult stunts. Sometimes I get scared for her, but there’s no stopping her.”

Her inspiration? Sachin Tendulkar and Saina Nehwal.

Hansika says, “Both are top players in the country. I like their determination — and I want to imbibe that. I like their fighting spirit — it gives me energy on the mat.”

Never nervous, just confident, Hansika often lands “drop kicks” on her opponents with a shout, leading to knockout wins!

Here’s wishing you all the best, Hansika.
