Gurgaon divided into five zones to address water woes

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gurgaon has devised a plan to meet the city's water demand. Initially, the city will be divided into five zones to better manage the water supply. In the next stage, Gurgaon will be divided into eight zones.

“The city requires around 80 million gallons of water per day, out of which the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant supplies 22 million gallons. The rest is supplied by the Basai water treatment plant," said DC Hardeep Singh. "We have assessed the city based on water requirement. Zones 1 and 2 are receiving water from the Basai plant, while Zone 3 is receiving supply from Chandu Budhera.”

An official of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) told City Spidey that according to the plan, Zone 1 will cover sectors 4, 5, 7, 9A, 12, 22, 23, Maruti Udyog and nearby areas. Zone 2 will cater to sectors 14, 15, 17, 31, 40, 47, Jalvayu Vihar, MG Road, and DLF phases I to III. Zone 3 will cater to sectors 43, 45, 46, 47, 48, 51, 52, 55, 56 and Sohna Road. Zone 4 will cover sectors 56 to 68; Zone 7 sectors 81 to 95; and Zone 8 sectors 99 to 115. Zones 5 and 6, both in Sector 72, will have boosting stations.

According to HUDA officials, the illegal connections and shifting of pipelines have been major reasons for water shortage across the city. In many places, people connect the main pipeline directly with their home supply, leading to damage and water leakage.

"Instead of connecting their water supplies with the main line, I request people to construct underground tanks to store water,” said the DC.

Of late, residents have been facing regular water shortage — first in March, when water supply was stopped in the old city owing to maintenance work, and then in April, when the pipelines were being shifted at Hero Honda Chowk and Iffco Chowk due to the construction of an underpass. On Tuesday, there was a leakage in the water pipeline, which caused a shortage in Palam Vihar, and sectors 4 and 5.

Neerja Wadhwa, a resident of Palam Vihar, said, “We face a water crunch every day. The authorities visit the area every now and then, but nothing has been done as of now.”
