Residents of New Palam Vihar are now bearing the brunt for the wrong-doings of a few who engage in theft of electricity. The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) decided to cut power supply in the area for four hours daily to make up for line loss from May 10.

Navin Verma, superintending engineer, Gurgaon Circle I, DHBVN, said that New Palam Vihar has 35 percent line loss. “DHBVN supplies power for 24 hours where loss is less than 20 per cent. It supplies power for 22 hours in areas where loss is 20-25 per cent. In areas where loss is 25-35 per cent, DHBVN supplies power for 20 hours. This is followed by 18 hours of supply to areas where loss is 35-50 per cent and 12 hours of supply to areas having loss over 50 per cent,” said Verma.

The official said that residents would have to cooperate in order to check power theft. It is a major cause for concern for the Haryana government, which issued strict directions for power cuts accordingly.

Meanwhile, residents countered the discom’s rationale. Nitin Seth, a resident, told City Spidey, “The officials can check every house for meter tampering and illegal connections at night. There are many other ways to deal with power theft. We are surprised and have not received any information from the department in this regard.”

Aseem Takkyar, a social activist and a resident of Palam Vihar, said, “The residents of New Palam Vihar are being targeted because this locality is yet to be regularised by the Haryana government. Power theft is happening across the city and even in posh localities.”
