"The only way for parents is to approach the court of law,” said Ministhy S, the Ghaziabad district magistrate.

Parents go on 'symbolic' hunger strike in front of Ghaziabad DM office

Angry parents from all over Ghaziabad conducted a 4-hour-long symbolic hunger strike in front of the District Magistrate’s office today. Despite the scorching heat with temperatures soaring over 43 degrees, over 150 parents with children studying in private schools participated in the protest.

The parent’s strike was conducted in protest of the administration’s decision to keep the investigation committee’s report away from the public.

Navneesh Rana, a parent who participated in the protest, told City Spidey that although the district administration has passed the buck to the state government, the parents wanted assurance that the schools would not try to exact the fees and charges before the government comes up with a decision or guidelines for the schools. “The reports and its findings should have been made public. What is there to hide from the people when only the people and schoolchildren are the ones who are suffering? We were waiting for May 11 with hopes that our problems will be solved by the administration. This has brought us more confusion instead,” Rana added.

Seema Tyagi, one of the parents leading the protest, said the current protest was only symbolic in nature and a larger one would take place if the parents did not receive an appropriate response from the authorities. “It is only the innocent people who are suffering and having to give away their hard-earned money due to the unjustified hikes," said Tyagi. "Our protest is getting stronger with support flowing in from different social quarters.”

TP Tyagi, the chairman of RWA Federation Ghaziabad, and also a part of the protest, told City Spidey that parents of schoolchildren are no different from normal people. “If parents suffer, everybody else has to join in support. RWA federation has lent complete support to the parents’ cause,” added Tyagi.

Similarly, lending support to the cause, the Bar Association of Ghaziabad has also assured legal assistance and advice to the parents.

However, speaking to City Spidey, Ministhy S, district magistrate of Ghaziabad, said she had repeatedly reminded the parents of the fact that playing the role of a collector, she had already sent her reports to the CBSE and the Chief Minister’s Office and any kind of decision lies in the government’s hands. “Right now, when there is a loophole in the policy and when the state government is looking into the issue, different district administrations cannot have different policies. The only way for parents is to approach the court of law,” Ministhy added.
