Sec 15: Clogged drain exposes lack of planning by Noida Authority

An open drain blocked by Noida Authority over a decade ago while constructing the underpass at Rajnigandha Chowk in Sector 16 for providing a thoroughfare for traffic has exposed the Authority’s lack of proper planning.

The open drain used to channelise rain water from Sector 15 to Yamuna river. But the Authority has failed to provide residents of the sector with an alternative. The result is that the part of the drain in the sector, which is 10 feet deep and is bigger than other parts, has been clogged.

Residents have been bearing with foul smell and poisonous gases emanating from the clogged drain. They say that the clogged drain poses health hazards.

PS Tirath, general secretary of the RWA, who ran pillar to post urging the Authority to sort out the issue, told City Spidey, “I am tired of complaining as no one is taking the issue seriously.”

“We have been raising the issue with the project engineer and other top officers of the Authority. But they don’t have a solution for a mistake they made years ago,” he said.

He said that the open drain passes along one side of Captain Vijayant Thapar Marg and the sector is also situated on the same side of the road. But the open drain has been cemented as it extends further towards Sector 18. There is no other option of channelising the flow of the drain.

“The open drain has turned into a gutter now as it is not connected to other main drains in the city. It has exposed the Authority’s lack of planning. It had constructed the underpass without an alternate solution for clearing the drain of the sector,” he said.

Moreover, some businessmen have covered the open drain to convert the space into parking lots for customers. This obstructs the Authority in carrying out regular cleaning of the gutter.

Residents have been finding it difficult to cope up with the situation. A resident of Block A, outside whose house the drain is overflowing, said that residents cannot stand outside their homes even for a while due to the foul smell. He added that it was an open invitation to issues such as viral fever that affects residents in the city every year.

HP Sharma, sanitation inspector, Noida Authority, admitted that the sector has an issue of blocked drain but he expressed helplessness in solving the problem. He said, “The open drain next to Sector 15 has been covered by many people. It has been obstructing us in carrying out the cleaning of the drain properly.” He assured that the overflowing drain in Block 1 would be cleaned shortly.

An officer with the Authority told City Spidey that the Authority conducted a survey of the sector last week to explore the possibility of solving the problem.
