Measurements done. Gurgaon will finally know where it can drink this weekend

The committee formed by Gurgaon's deputy commissioner (DC) on April 1 to measure the distance of pubs and bars from state and national highways, today concluded the last leg of measurement in Gurgaon. It measured the distance of five establishments in Sector 30, Sohna Road, Sultanpur and Manesar. The team will submit a report to the DC tomorrow, which will include the measurement and the layout plans of the pubs and bars.

“We will submit our report to the deputy commissioner on Tuesday. The committee members will then take a decision. We need to take population details from Sultanpur village, and for the rest we will prepare the final report on Tuesday,” said Aruna Singh, deputy excise and taxation commissioner (East).

The measurement started at 8 am from Ninkasi Brewery, Bar Bottles & Barrels in Sector 30, and thereafter went to Sohna Road. The last location where measurements were carried out was Sultanpur, the Haryana tourism complex on Farukhnagar Road. The officials remained tight-lipped about the entire exercise.

“We were not aware that the officials would be carrying out the measurements on Monday; we were expecting them last week. Though the officials have not shared the meter reading with us, we are safe from the SC ban, as we were at a distance of 527 m,” said RN Rathee, director of Ninkasi Brewery.

The court ban had affected 115 pubs and bars in a city dotted with offices and factories of multinational companies and top Indian firms. On May 4, 33 Cyber Hub pubs cleared the court ban and started serving alcohol.

Sixty-nine pubs and bars have already started serving liquor, but watering holes in Sector 30 and Sohna Road are still on hold.

The measurement was carried out for these outlets earlier as well, and they were within 500 m of the highway. But the Haryana government released fresh guidelines a few days ago, saying the distance from the point of sale was to be measured instead of the entry of the establishment.
