Several private organisations, hospitals , civil societies, non-government organisations (NGOs), resident welfare associations and government organisations came together to draft an action plan and constitute a team called Gurgaon Task Force to deal with the vector-borne diseases (VBD) in the city on National Dengue Day (May 16).

The development happened at a three-hour-long interactive session organised by DLF Foundation, a non-profit organisation, in collaboration with the health department, Gurgaon, and ministry of health and family welfare, government of India, at a club in DLF Phase V.

Representatives of Max hospitals and Medanta, research scholars from JNU and RWA representatives of The Pinnacle, Princeton Estate, Wellinton Estate, Magnolias, The Icon, Westend Heights, Trinity Towers and The Carlton Estate were among those present at the session.

Kanta Goel, chief medical officer (CMO), Gurgaon said, “It’s important to have knowledge about VBD to be able to tackle it. Raising awareness among people is another crucial step. We need to be proactive in educating the community.”

Prominent doctors of the city such as SS Saroha, deputy civil surgeon, VBD, Saroj Deswal, biologist, office of civil surgeon, and Ram Prakash, epidemiologist, office of civil surgeon, shared their views on the subject, the intricacies of the disease and the precautions that should be taken.

Mohini Daljeet, CEO, Max Foundation, said, “The case of vector-borne diseases reflects the absurdity of development. We claim to be advanced and equipped with latest technology, but at the same time we are struggling to deal with diseases that are curable and preventable.”

Participants of the session were divided into different groups and were asked to come up with suggestions to tackle the menace. These groups also made interactive presentations focusing on ways to combat vector-borne diseases.

Concluding the session, Col (Retd) Tej Prakash Tewari, advisor, DLF Foundation, said, “There is an urgent need to address the issue of VBD in Gurgaon and teamwork is the key. We are trying to bring all corporates, hospitals, RWAs and other organisations working in the area under one umbrella and jointly take steps in sync with the government to control these diseases.”

“The session on vector-borne diseases was informative and made us aware of the magnitude of the problem. We understand our crucial role in implementing the blueprint to tackle the menace,” said SN Misra, member of RWA, Wellington Estate, DLF Phase V.
