Gurgaon: Time to bat for the women, people! Press conference for Women’s Cricket League Season II at Appu Ghar, Gurgaon

It’s a level playing field, and women are out to prove that cricket is as much their game as men’s. G-towners get ready for some ace action, as Women’s Cricket League Season II is on at Tau Devi Lal stadium from May 21-27 .

One team each from Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Delhi will be participating in the tournament.

More than 140 girls turned up for trials at Tau Devi Lal stadium in the past three months. The final list of players was declared, based on performance at the stadium.

Cricketer Chetan Sharma told City Spidey, “I will attend the matches to boost the confidence of these wonderful women. No game is gender-specific, and I am proud to be supporting this initiative.”

But, unfortunately, such events lack sponsors — a point rightly brought up by Vishnu Bhagat, co-founder of Pure Play, a sportswear company, which is also one of the event sponsors.

Bhagat said, “Haryana is known as India’s medal factory. We have decided to fully support the girls in whatever way we can. We will certainly provide them with our best sportswear.”

The excitement is palpable among the girls selected for the matches.

Gauri Gaur from the Delhi team admitted, “I am really delighted. This is the second time I have been selected. It is really a big opportunity for me.”

Khayati Gulani, BCCI-qualified cricket coach, felt that not many turn up for women's matches. She, therefore, urged Gurgaonites to show their support for the girls by attending the event.

Nisha Thakur from Celebrity Motions, the company that’s organising the tournament, said, “Women's empowerment is not just about candle marches, preaching and reacting over social media! It is something that needs concrete action. Our vision is to host such matches in other states as well.”
