East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) will soon implement Compost Banao – Compost Apnao, a scheme launched by Union Urban Development Ministry.

“We wanted to kickstart our tenure with this initiative,” said Vipin Singh, newly elected EDMC standing committee chairman. “Garbage is a major issue in the city and our aim is to implement the zero-garbage concept, which means all the waste produced in a particular area is disposed of or consumed within that area.”

“I have planned to start the operation from Mayur Vihar I, my municipal ward. This concept is fairly new and will need cooperation from all residents to make it a success. I have discussed the concept with the residents and the RWAs of Mayur Vihar I  and residents are willing to support it,” added Singh.

According to the plan, the dry organic waste generated in a society will be dumped in earmarked areas to convert the garbage into compost. The concept will help reduce the expense of transporting garbage from the source to the landfill sites.
