The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram is set to restart evenings of cultural programmes from 7.30 pm on May 20 at the open-air theatre in Sector 29.

V Umashankar, MCG commissioner, said, “To encourage art and culture in the city, MCG has decided to restart the cultural evenings in Gurgaon. As it used to happen earlier, there will be different cultural programmes at the open-air theatre on all Saturdays of the month.”

“The different events will include theatre, musical evenings, performances by school students and renowned regional artists,” he added.

The theme for this weekend is the culture of Haryana and Ashok Guddu, a renowned Haryanvi singer will perform with his group. The events will provide a stage for singers, dancers, upcoming artists and school children showcase their talent.

SS Rohilla, public relations officer, MCG, told City Spidey, “We have been doing such events regularly as we are aware that the means of entertainment are very expensive in the city. People can come here and enjoy regional performances free of cost. An art and culture committee has been formed to take care of things.”

“In Natya Shastra [a detailed treatise on performing arts], it is said that the place where art and culture dwells, crime graph goes down. We are doing our bit to make the city peaceful,” he added.

Such cultural events were organised by MCG from March, 2015, to September, 2016. The events were suspended due to the winter season. Thousands of people used to turn up every Saturday to enjoy cultural performances.
