About 400 parents of children studying in various schools in Noida and Greater Noida on May 18 staged a protest outside the district collectorate in Surajpur, Gautam Budh Nagar. They demanded to eliminate privatisation of school education.

They protested under the banner of Shiksha Adhikar Andolan, a group that has been fighting against private schools’ managements. The protest began at 11 am and continued for the next three hours.

The group intensified its protest against annual fee hikes in the private schools and demanded that the state government take over all private schools that have been increasing the fee every year.

Satyapal Chaudhary, a member of the group, said, "The government has acquired land from framers to develop industries and townships. Similarly, it is the government’s responsibility to make quality education within everyone’s reach."

Sharing similar sentiments, Dr Rupesh Verma, another member of the group, said that the government should acquire privately-run schools to provide students equal opportunity for education.

Parents also met Ramanuj Singh, city magistrate, and handed over a memorandum of their demands. Singh assured them that their demands would be forwarded to the government.
