Why should the Metro pillars of Millennium City be gummed with tacky posters? Let them become hanging gardens.

Notice the pillar in the background. See anything different? Volunteers put up plants on Pillar No 200 at Huda City Centre Metro station

Should posters be gummed on public property? Gurgaon residents certainly think otherwise.

A local NGO, Uthaan, with help from volunteers and residents, has taken on the difficult task of removing posters from Metro pillars and replacing them with potted plants.

“Our first target: Pillar No 200 at the Huda City Centre Metro station. We’ve started pulling down the posters and putting up clamped potted plants around the pillar. Hopefully, this will stop people from putting up tacky stuff on these pillars,” said Parvinder Singh, employed with a private company.

Gurman Singh, another volunteer, added, “The pillar looked so dirty. We wanted to beautify it and create something similar to a hanging garden.”

Giving details, Sanjay Kaushik, director of Uthaan, explained, “We are using special  pots for the purpose. For the potting mix, we are using coconut shell powder to increase water retention. The plants are the xerophyte variety,  which requires less water to survive.”

“It was a beautiful feeling to see a concrete pillar transform into something so green and pretty," added Monika Grewal, a resident of Sector 23.
