How a 9-year-old became a parent... Krishnav Puri with his kittens Ki and Pie

An act of compassion by a 9-year-old boy, Krishnav Puri, a resident of DLF Ph IV, has saved the life of two kittens.

Krishnav was on one of his a regular visits to Jeev Ashram in Rajokri, Delhi, when he found two newborn kittens locked up in an enclosure with a number of bigger cats. The kittens had just lost their mother, he was told.

That was when Krishnav knew what he had to do.

“I felt immensely sad for the kittens, and I asked my father if we could adopt them. Being an animal lover himself, my father immediately agreed,” recalled Krishnav.

Compassion for animals comes naturally to Krishnav — it’s a thread that binds the family. Once he took care of a stray dog as well. Had DJ — as Krishnav fondly calls the dog — not been treated, he would have lost a leg.

Krishnav did everything to make the kittens his own. “My aunt says when kittens are born their mother licks up the blood on them. So I use a cotton to clean them. That's the closest I can go to replicating the action for them,” he shares.

When you are a single child, having pets can do a world of good. And it’s no different for Krishnav, who’s having a ball feeding the cats, cleaning them and playing with them. His mother, Shubhra, adds, “He has become so good at managing things — he has even become more responsible and considerate. Children, in fact, feel very connected with pets.”

Ki and Pie, as Krishnav calls them, have already adjusted to their new home. “They have a particular place to poop and know how to behave themselves. I feed them cat food, curd rice and roti too,” Krishnav shares.

And as anyone with pet kittens will know, they are a handful. With so much activity at home, the Puri household is no longer watching TV!
