Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Monday introduced e-rickshaws to provide last-mile connectivity to commuters. The service was flagged-off by Delhi Metro's Managing Director Dr Mangu Singh from their headquarters at Metro Bhawan.

The facility will be available at all NCR Metro stations. The first fleet of five e-rickshaws will operate from the Vaishali Metro station.

Dr Singh was present as the chief guest at the World Environment Day celebrations at the Metro Bhawan today. Other directors and senior officials from DMRC were also present at the event.

"DMRC tries to incorporate eco-friendly initiatives in all its spheres of functioning," said Dr Singh. "The idea behind a dedicated e-rickshaw service at the Metro stations is to encourage commuters to use non-polluting public transport modes over personal vehicles."

One of the e-rickshaw service providers aims to introduce 610 e-rickshaws across eight Metro stations within a year.

The specially designed e-rickshaws will be equipped with CCTV and GPS, and have full windscreens and covered cabins. They will travel a distance of up to 4 km from the Metro station of their origin. The service will soon start from the Metro stations of Gurgaon and Faridabad. After its implementation of the service across the NCR, it will also be introduced within Delhi (subject to feasibility). All relevant information regarding this service can be found out on the helpline number 011-39595468.

As on date, DMRC operates 291 feeder buses on 42 routes, connecting 54 Metro stations. About 2 lakh commuters use these feeder bus services on a daily basis.
