Residents of Sector 56, Gurgaon, in association with a Gurgaon-based NGO Eco Santulan, have set up a compost plant in the complex of the community centre . The set up will recycle kitchen waste and produce manure for plants.
The plant can treat 750 kg of kitchen waste on a daily basis.
Sudhir Bhardwaj, sector president, said, “We have already started the process, and are currently treating 400 kg of waste every day.”
When composting, three layers are put on top of each other — the lowest layer is the wet waste, then there’s khaad and finally a layer of dry leaves. These layers are left to stay for a month, producing manure.
“Kitchen waste is easy and manageable, as we already have it segregated in our homes. Producing manure from it is the only wise thing to do. It will go a long way in strengthening our green cover,” said Chandra Kanta, a resident.
The residents are being made aware of the initiative through a WhatsApp group, where videos and pictures are being shared.
