The sudden increase in cyber crime in the last five months has left the city’s police worried. The police believe that it is people’s desire to gain wealth overnight that is turning them into victims and lack of awareness has worsened the situation.

Most of these cases pertain to unknown phone calls and shoddy advertisements. Cyber criminals trap their victims by luring them with promises of quick profit from sham lotteries.

According to Arun Kumar Singh, SP city, people should first investigate properly and then invest their income. They must not give in to their desires before getting hold of sufficient information about the source to which they are giving money. In such crimes, people must immediately inform the police and file a complaint without any delay.

Singh also said that in case of timely alerts, the police contacts the payment gateway service providers and immediately stops the transaction. “The lost money can be refunded if the transactions are stopped in time as all online transactions are carried out via payment gateways,” he said.

The police has also asked people not to divulge any information regarding bank accounts, credit and debit cards, and online wallets to anyone. “In case of any unknown transaction from the bank accounts, the police must be alerted immediately,” Singh added.
