Chain snatching incidents on the rise in Dwarka?

With more and more incidents of chain snatching coming light in Dwarka, residents feel that the crime has increased in the sub city. They say the incident happens mostly early in the morning or during evening hours near society gates.

For instance, one such incident happened on June 12 in Sector 7. Air vice marshal (retd) SK Sharma, president of Air Force Naval Apartments, Sector 7, told City Spidey, “Yesterday, around 5.40 am, a couple was going for a morning walk. Suddenly two young boys came on a bike and tried to snatch the chain from the woman. But as the couple resisted and others present nearby shouted, the boys dropped the chain. Such incidents when people go for morning and evening walks have become frequent.”

According to locals, in the last one month, chain snatching incidents have happened in Sector 10 near Vinayak Apartments, in Sector 4 near PNB Apartments and Modern Convent School, and in Sector 3 near Heritage Apartments. They said that the incidents happened either in the morning or in the evening. There was also an incident of molestation on the stretch of road from Modern Convent School, Sector 4, to Defence Officers Apartments, Sector 4. A resident of Defence Officers Apartments was the victim in this case.

AK Parashar, a resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, Sector 7, said, “Law and order is not up to mark as people who indulge in such activities are fearless. The police should ensure a safe environment in Dwarka.”

Meanwhile, police officials say that they are taking measures to check such incidents and that the number of chain snatching incidents has decreased in the area.

But one of the major factors showing a decrease in the number of chain snatching incidents is that the victims choose not to file an FIR. They say that they had fear and hesitation in filing the FIR as miscreants engaging in such crimes know the whereabouts of the persons they target. They also fear that if they filed an FIR, they would be targeted again.
