Did Ggn police change its stance just because the victim was a dog, not a human?

It has a handwritten statement that the four-month-old puppy was thrown out of the balcony, but now it has closed all investigation just because the witness did a volte face and said it was an accident.

Did Ggn police change its stance just because the victim was a dog, not a human?

On June 15, City Spidey reported a cruel incident in which a four-month-old pup was thrown from the first-floor balcony of a flat in Sector 42, Gurgaon. It turns out that five days after a complaint was lodged at the Sushant Lok police station, investigations have abruptly been closed.

Why? Because Dora Shlem — who had reported the matter to the police and had said that her partner Phillip Maxwell had thrown the pup out in a fit of rage as it had chewed up its laptop DTH cable — has done a volte face. She now says it was an accident.

Maxwell and Shlem have been living together in a rented house in Sector 42, and on the night of June 15 around 11 pm, a neighbour Arvind Kumar Verma had heard “something being thrown out” and rushed to find a pup in agony in a clump of bushes. He, along with Shlem, had rushed the pup to CGS hospital in DLF Phase III, where it was given medical aid. The custody of the dog was taken over by Fauna Police, an NGO, that very night.

The pup was left with a fractured foreleg and a distressing fear of humans.

“She was petrified and scared of humans when we got her a week back, but she has slowly started recovering and getting over her fear,” said Abinav Srihan, managing trustee and founder at Fauna Police, Gurgaon, and a member of Delhi Advisory Board For Animal Welfare.

The police had been investigating the matter, but has now confirmed that no further investigation would take place, following Shlem’s statement.

What’s strange, however, is that despite professing their love for the pup, neither Maxwell, nor Shlem has turned up to meet the pup even once since it was brought under the care of Fauna Police.

Also, it is quite difficult to imagine how ti could have been an accident. Can a four-month-old puppy jump over a raised balcony railing on its own and plunge into the bushes below?

“The attitude of the police has been very disappointing,” said Srihan. “All logical and document proof in the form of a handwritten statement by Dora saying that Phillip threw the puppy over the balcony has been overlooked.”

“I am astonished at how senseless people can be. The incident could have killed the poor pup,” he added.

However, the good news is that the canine is now in safe hands and is recuperating fast. She has been nicknamed Nessa, meaning “miracle”, and is also up for adoption.
