The rains have affected the crops severely, making the price shoot up almost threefold.
Residents of Gurgaon have had no choice but to buy tomatoes at an exorbitant Rs 80 per kg over the past two days.
"I was shocked to see tomatoes being sold at Rs 80," said Rakhi Talwar, a resident of Rosewood City. "I bought and used tomato puree instead."
Vegetable vendors across the city were seen pacifying irate customers, saying the almost threefold hike in price was due to the untimely rains that damaged much of the crop. They have predicted a further increase in rates over the next few days.
