FedAOA to approach NGT over GDA's apathy towards sewer issue

Allahabad High Court had passed an order directing GDA to sort out the issue of sewer lines in Indirapuram over a year ago. The problem persists.

FedAOA to approach NGT over GDA's apathy towards sewer issue

The Federation of AOAs (FedAOA) has threatened to approach the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over Ghaziabad Development Authority’s inaction over the blocked sewer lines in Ahinsa Khand II.

Residents said sewer water overflowing from blocked sewer lines flows back into the rainwater harvesting pits of their societies. They said that while on the one hand, the government encourages rainwater harvesting, on the other hand, dirty and contaminated water from the society’s sewer lines flows back into the rainwater pits. What's worse — the authorities are not lifting a finger to fix the problem.

Residents had approached Allahabad High Court with a writ petition in February 2016, to which the court had passed an order directing GDA to sort out the issue. Following the court's order, residents had formed a five-member committee to assist GDA in addressing the issue.

Residents said all they had got from GDA ever since the court order had been false promises.

Speaking to City Spidey, Alok Kumar, patron and founding member of FedAOA, said they were also considering a contempt petition on non-compliance of the court’s order.

Kumar further said that FedAOA had been coordinating with several other AOAs and collating sufficient proof of GDA's inaction. When asked why they had planned to approach NGT when a court order was already in place, Kumar said, “On several accounts, we have seen NGT take direct action against officials and slap hefty fines on them. This is just one way of building pressure on the officials to get them to work.”
