East Delhi's C&D waste plant recycles 500 MT of debris every day!

The lieutenant governor of Delhi Anil Baijal, along with East Delhi municipal commissioner, today inspected the construction and demolition waste plant in East Delhi’s Shastri Park.

Spread over 2.5 acres, the plant was set up in February last year under the public and private partnership model in collaboration with a private firm at an approximate cost of Rs 20 crore. The motive was to manage the daily construction waste generated by the city and curb air pollution in the city. EDMC claimed that the plant recycles about 500 metric tonnes of debris daily from various construction sites in East Delhi.

EDMC commissioner Mohanjeet Singh said, “This plant has processed more than 2 lakh metric tonnes of debris since it became operational. It recovers and recycles about 95 per cent construction and demolition waste brought in from different parts of the city. As such, it has taken a lot of load off the Ghazipur landfill and other waste dumping sites. It is built on a green philosophy, using materials such as bricks, sand, tiles and soil. The private partner will run this plant for 15 years and then it will be transferred to the corporation.”

Singh also added that the plant had recently been facilitated with a wet processing technology, which would minimise residues, and dust and noise pollution.

LG Baijal also acknowledged EDMC for having taken this initiative for reducing construction waste and minimising air pollution in the city. “EDMC must explore the possibility of enhancing the capacity of this plant,” he added. “I am sure both the centre and the state governments will support this initiative.”
