Passing through this Noida road? Keep your guard up

Street lights not working from Sumitra Hospital in Sector 35 to Sector 49. Residents say the darkness acts as a cover for anti-social activities and causes road mishaps.

Passing through this Noida road? Keep your guard up

Imagine returning home after work and the road you have to take is engulfed in darkness. Now imagine a woman in your situation. It's a vulnerable position to be in, wouldn't you agree?

Noida commuters are facing a similar problem. The 1-km stretch between Sumitra Hospital, in Sector 35, and Sector 49 is pitch dark after sundown. An underpass in Sector 37, between Noida City Centre Metro station and Noida Bus Depot (Sector 35), also faces a similar problem. The lights installed in these stretches do not work and cause commuters inconvenience.

Seema Kumari, a Sector 49 resident and a daily commuter, says, “It is not safe, especially for women, to take the route after dusk. There are shady characters loitering around the ISBT and the Metro station late in the evening. I have no option but to call my parents to pick me up.”

Residents of City View Cooperative Society, located near the stretch, say that the underpass has become a hotbed of anti-social activities.

Pradeep Kumar Dungdung, manager of the society, says, “About a month back, two women from our society were coming back from a market. Two people on a motorbike came from nowhere and snatched their chains. The criminals had no problems escaping because it was so dark.” Dungdung adds that a couple, who are doctors at Sumitra Hospital, met with an accident outside the hospital gate when a car hit them in the dark.

When City Spidey took up the issue with project engineer Salil Yadav, he assured that the problem would be resolved. “The issues have been noted and a junior engineer will visit the site immediately and get the lights fixed,” he added.

The stretch connects Atta and Chhalera main road, and is used by hundreds of daily commuters, especially from the sectors 35, 37, 39, 40, 46, 48 and 49, and Noida Extension, to access the Noida City Centre Metro station.
