Four days after a video showing a man choking a street dog to death in Noida's Sector 45 surfaced on social media, the accused has been identified and detained by the police.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Dhan Singh (48), a former army personnel serving as a traffic marshal in Noida. The case was initiated a day after clearer visuals of the man killing the animal surfaced.

"The man has been served a notice and his offence will be duly recorded in the charge sheet," said AK Singh, station house officer of the Sector 39 police station. "There is no provision for arrest under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. He was detained to record his statement in the case.”

According to the police, in his statement, the accused said he was in his senses and not inebriated. According to him, he had gone to buy vegetablewhen a stray dog barked at him. He said he stood on the dog to defend himself. Somonlookers in the market told him not to let go of the animal, as it was a rabid dog and it would bite him.

On Friday, an 18-second video clip of the incident shot by a passerby had gone viral. In the video, it appears that the traffic police personnel was drunk and despite several requests from the passersby, he continues to stand on the dog and nailed the dog to the ground with his feet for about an hour, leading to its death. The incident took place at Som Bazaar in Sector 45, between 9 pm and 10 pm.

The Humane Society International (HSI), an animal protection organisation, had approached the policto register a complaint in the matter under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. They had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for any information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person seen in the video.
