Five hours of constant rains on Thursday had brought life to a halt in Noida, flooding basements and waterlogging the entire city. To avoid a rerun, Noida Authority has started clearing out the city’s main irrigation drain.

Senior officials of the Authority, such as RK Mishra, ACEO; HS Yadav, chief engineer, and others, inspected the drain yesterday. Today evening, Amit Mohan Parsad, CEO of Noida Authority, and Noida MLA Punkaj Singh inspected the drain near Sector 51.

The 17-km-long drain, originating from Kondli in Delhi and ending in River Yamuna, passes through many densely populated residential sectors of Noida. The water flowing in the drain is highly contaminated, and has become a health hazard for homes in the vicinity.

The drain, chocked with garbage and plastic waste, is blocking smooth flushing out of rainwater. Thirteen other big and small drains that are connected to this irrigation drain, which empties rainwater into the Yamuna at Sector 150.

An official of Noida Authority said that cleaning has started near Sector 51. He added, “By Monday, we are hoping to clean the drain till Barola village.”

RS Yadav, senior project engineer of Noida Authority, told City Spidey, “We have installed two machines near Sector 51 for cleaning out the drain. We are pulling out plastic and other wastes from the drain to ensure that rainwater empties into the Yamuna.”

He added, “The Authority has released a tender for the clean up of the entire length of the drain, but the process will take time. Right now, we are picking particular choke points, such as near Sector 34 and Sector 51, where the problem is more pronounced.”
