Noida: A human chain to reclaim air in Sector 137 Protesters at the dump yard in Sector 137

What do you do when all your pleas fall on deaf ears? Make a human chain to jolt authorities into action — well, hopefully. Today afternoon, residents of high-rises in Sector 137 of Noida conducted a protest march, and formed a human chain near the dump yard to prevent workers from reaching the spot.

Hundreds of residents began the march from Logix and continued till the dump yard in Sector 137.

What caused the weekend stir? ‘To reclaim the air outside our homes’, lashed out residents.

The stench from the dump yard has made life dreadful for the residents — they can’t even stand in their balconies without feeling nauseous. Garbage, ferried by Noida Authority vans from all over the city, is dumped here. With filth strewn across the roads, the place bears sad resemblance to the Ghazipur dump yard.

As many as 10,000 people living in the eight housing societies of Sector 137, such as Exotica Fresco, Paramount Floraville, Gulshan Vivante and Paras Tierea, have demanded that Noida Authority shift the dump yard to another place.
Saurav Gupta, a resident of Victoria Emperor, a residential society in the vicinity, narrates the horror of living in the area: “In the evening the entire area begins to stink, and the stench travels in air. We have to keep our balcony doors and windows shut at all times. Sometimes, we find it difficult to step out — it gets difficult to breathe.”

“The problem is bigger than just garbage piling up. The non-biodegradable waste will eventually contaminate the groundwater too. The toxicity will seep into the water — it will become carcinogenic,” he continued.

Here’s what Anand Mohan Singh, general manager of the Greater Noida Authority, had to say: “By November end, we’ll start dumping waste at Astoli. But the waste-to-energy plant at the landfill may be functional only by 2018.”
According to a study, Noida generates nearly 660 tonne of waste daily, and it does not have a landfill site for disposal of its solid waste even after 40 years of coming into existence!
