The Dwarka Water Body Revival Committee is not happy. And why? They found the authorities slack in their efforts to capture and harvest rainwater for the revival of the sub-city’s dying water bodies.

Members of the committee, such as Diwan Singh and Captain SS Mann, were inspecting a site at Sector 23. They were accompanied by NGT-appointed nodal officer SD Singh, engineers of DDA (Delhi Development Authority) and the DJB (Delhi Jal Board), and active members of the local community, including Devender Kumar, Ramandeep Singh and DC Mathur.

Singh, who has played an instrumental role in the revival of water bodies in the area, said, “Due to the slow pace of work, much of the valuable rainwater is already lost. But from now on, I hope DDA will do something about it. We have taken the matter to NGT — and hopefully, that should speed up work.”

Several measures were suggested to revive the water bodies in sectors 20 and 23, Dhulsiras and Kakrola, such as planting local flora, development of the woodlands, immediate installation of peizometers (to measure liquid pressure in a system), laying of pipelines and removal of encroachment.

“Dr Shashank Shekhar of Delhi University has provided the design for a monitoring system. There’s some ray of hope this rainy season — let’s hope the dying water bodies get a boost. The Sector 23 site now has some water, and it’s all because of the efforts of the community,” explained Diwan.

Committee members feel without NGT intervention, DDA will not act. In fact, the site visit was necessitated by the contempt petition filed with the NGT.

Captain SS Mann, also the vice-president of Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi, said, “The nodal officer, SD Singh, who has been appointed by the NGT, and the engineers of DDA and DJB have assured action. We want a serious approach from them — it has been more than four years and nothing effective has been done on the part of the authorities. Whatever is happening is happening because of NGT intervention.”
