The number of swine flu cases in Gautam Budh Nagar is on the rise. City administration on Sunday confirmed 20 new cases, taking the total number of H1N1 cases to 38.

Swine flu is caused by swine influenza virus, is highly contagious and can spread through saliva and mucus particles, experts said.

The blood samples of swine flu patients had been tested by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi.

Dr Anurag Bhargav, chief medical officer (CMO) of Gautam Budh Nagar, told City Spidey,“We have sent about 68 samples for swine flu to NCDC for testing. Out of that, 38 cases of swine flu were confirmed. Some more test results are expected by Monday and the number could rise.”

“More than 60 per cent of our patients are suffering from these maaria and swine flu. We have set up isolated wards for swine flu and malaria patients in the district hospital and in the super-speciality children's hospital with 10 and 20 beds respectively. Private hospitals have also been asked to create isolated wards for patients.”

The CMO office also confirmed that about 50 blood samples were tested for dengue, but none were positive.

Issuing an advisory, Dr Bhargav said, “Diabetics and those with kidney problems are more prone to swine flu. Patients should avoid going to crowded areas and should ideally maintain a distance from others to avoid spreading the infection.”

"We have issued instructions to all government and private schools, hospitals, government offices and district hospitals, along with Noida Authority and RWAs, to clear out stagnant water,” Bhargava said.

The CMO added that the department had been running a month-long campaign to spread awareness against mosquito breeding. People have been urged not to allow water to stagnate in empty vessels, coolers, pots or vases. “We have also asked Noida Authority to fumigate the city, especially around parks and drains,” Bhargava concluded.
