The minister also said Rs 900 crore has been allocated for the purpose, and the irrigation and flood control department are to look into the work.
If the promise is carried out, even posh colonies will benefit, as their storm water drains from also carry sewerage from unauthorised colonies. For instance, the drains of Vasundhara Enclave, a posh locality of East Delhi — which houses many as 45 co-operative group housing societies (CGHS) — are connected with the sewer drains of Dallupura and Ashok Nagar in the vicinity. Both the colonies lack sewer lines and drinking water supply.
Residents of housing societies have often complained about the same. In the absence of a proper outlet for the sewerage of unauthorised colonies, government agencies have linked them with storm-water drains of the nearby societies.

Rishiraj Shrivastava, a resident of Paryatan Vihar B4 Apartments, said, “This is a grave failure of the government, and we are suffering. They thoughtlessly connected the sewer drains to our storm water drains. Sometimes, they block our water supply to provide drinking water to these colonies. How long is it to go on? If these colonies get proper sewer lines and water supply, it would be a great relief for us.”
There are about 1,700 unauthorised colonies in the NCR — most located adjacent to posh colonies.
Let’s hope the government will act on its word.
