What should have been a welcome spell of rain and the fruition of some good, hard work for Fresco condominium in Sector 50, Gurgaon, turned out to be a damp squib. If only its seven rainwater harvesting pits were functional, it could have conserved a lot of rainwater, but there was no such thing.

Ever since the condominium came into existence, the rainwater harvesting pits have been lying defunct, and hence unable to store any water. Despite having a capacity of 3.5 lakh litres, the pits can’t store any water. As the pipe is not connected to groundwater at the base, water is not seeping inside at the speed it should.

“We wish the pits had been operational, as water conserved could have been used in other ways, such as watering the lawns and the gardens,” said Nilesh Tandon, president of the Fresco RWA.

The RWA has been trying to make them operational but there has been no assistance from any quarter.

“On the day it rained, our pits were already full, so water was seen overflowing. In the absence of a connection of our stormwater line with the Huda line, we had to pump 3.5 lakh litres of water out. Our basements, too, got flooded. We have highlighted this issue to the builder, but no corrective step has been taken,” Tandon said.

He added, “We have written to the Haryana State Pollution Control Board now, and hope a solution comes our way.”
