Inflated electricity bills shock Gurgaon Sector 56 residents

Gurgaon Sector 56 residents are in a shock after power distributing company DHVBN sent inflated electricity bills, some by three or four times their average electricity usage charges.

RWA of the sector, which was flooded with complaints from its members, has asked them to withhold payments till the issue was sorted out with the power company.

Receiving such bills, especially after they went through several power outages, has the residents angry. To be fair to the power company, a handful of residents had ridiculously low electricity bills as well.

Yet, individually the residents are unwilling to speak out openly for fear of victimisation.

“I was aghast and shaken to get the bill, that is four times the amount I usually get. I am wondering as to when and how I used so much electricity,” said a resident.

The RWA of the region was flooded with complaints from members.

“We got lots of complaints of inflated bills and hence the only option was to ask residents not to make any payments for the same till further clarification from DHVBN. Even my bill is double of what I usually get,” said Sudhir Bhardwaj, president of the RWA.

In fact, there were few residents who received bills for a much lower amount than expected. They are now scared that the next bill could be astronomical and charge arrears and penalty.

Sachin Yadav, Executive Engineer (EE) with DHVBN, said, "The residents have raised concerns over erroneous billing and faulty meters. We will examine the whole thing and rectify the bills before the deadline for payment runs out.”
