No power tariff hike in Delhi for third consecutive year

Here is some good news for residents of Delhi – there will be no power tariff hike in the union capital city.

The Delhi government has made it clear that it will not allow a hike in electricity tariff for the third consecutive year.

The state government declaration came after a spate of protests by several Residents Welfare Associations (RWA) against a proposal of discoms to hike tariff by a whopping 20 per cent. The proposal was made two weeks ago.

A Delhi government spokesperson confirmed that, “The office of power minister, Satyender Jain, has issued letters to power discoms and Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission stating that their proposal to increase in electricity tariff was disapproved.”

The RWA representatives who had opposed the hike, told City Spidey that the government had not approved the discoms’ power tariff hike proposal but had failed to respond to several queries raised by the RWAs.

Last week, City Spidey had reported that RWA representatives had questioned arbitrary decisions of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). The RWAs are also demanding that the private power discoms under the preview of RTI and audit of their accounts by the CAG.

VS Vohra, an RWA representative, said, “The government disapproved Discoms proposal as we had threatened to launch a state-wide protest if the hike proposal went through.”

Taking the government to task for refusing to respond to queries of RWA, Vohra said, “We have decided to file applications under RTI to bring out the reality of corruption in private power discoms.”
