Living under the shelter of Lord Krishna, these residents count their blessings

We met residents of societies across the NCR that had names inspired by the blue God.

Living under the shelter of Lord Krishna, these residents count their blessings

Today is Janmashtami — the day we celebrate the birth of one of the most popular Hindu deities, Lord Krishna. Known by a number of names — Govinda, Mukunda, Madhusudhan, Vasudeva, and Makhan chor in affection, our loveable lord comes in handy when it comes to naming residential buildings.

There are several housing societies across the NCR whose names are inspired by the charming, mischievous yet wise avatar of Vishnu. Of course, residents of these socities feel blessed to be living under the umbrella of a divine brand, even as they celebrate the Lord's birthday in high voltage excitement.

Dwarka

Vrindavan Apartments in Sector 6 is named after the town where Lord Krishna spent his childhood days. Monika Miglani, a social worker and a resident of the society, said, “We celebrate Janmashtami in a traditional way. Children are dressed up as Krishna and Radha. Women of the society also organise a kirtan.”

It is said that Krishna conducted the administration of his kingdom from Dwarka (in Gujrat) while residing with his family in Bet Dwarka. While the sub-city itself is called Dwarka, there happens to be a society in Sector 7 that is known as Dwarka Apartments. Manisha Goel, a resident of the society, said, “ We celebrate Janmashtami on a large scale. We organise Krishna Leela, where children of the society dress up like Krishna and perform song-and-dance routines. We also organise a Krishna Jhula."

Radha is a milkmaid (gopi), the lover and the most represented companion of Lord Krishna. Her longing for Krishna is seen as a symbolism for the longing for spirituality and the divine. NK Jaitely, the secretary of Sri Radha Krishna Apartments managing committee in Sector 7, said, “You should see our temple during Janmashtami. That is where we celebrate each year. We decorate the temple with bulbs of different colours. The women and children take part in cultural programmes."

"This year's Janmashtami coincides with the Independence Day, so we will celebrate both on August 15," said Vijay Sharma, president of Krishna Kunj Apartments in Sector 7.

Indirapuram

"It feels like we are living under Lord Krishna's shelter," said Mohit Dwivedi, a resident of Krishna Apra Garden. "My mother says she will never leave this society, as she loves the fact that its name starts with the Lord's name. She says we will never find a society with a better name. We have lived up to our society's name. Our society has a huge Krishna temple and we have the best gardens in all of Indirapuram. Our Janmashtami plans include a grand function with cultural programmes from 8 pm to 12 pm. I think the fact that our society has the Lord's name in it is a positive sign."

Arun Rai, a resident of Shipra Krishna Vista, said, "We feel blessed by the lord as our society has his name in it. This Janmashtami, we have called a Ras Leela team from Mathura to perform in our society. Our function will start at 7.30 pm and continue until midnight."

East Delhi

Agrasen Awas, a co-operative group housing society in IP Extension, has two of its blocks named after Krishna — Krishna and Govind. Umesh Gupta, a resident of the society said, “Society’s residents celebrate Lord Krishna’s birth every year with bhajans and prayers for goodwill. Residents assemble at the temple located in Krishna Block and the bhajans will start at around 7.30 pm and continue until 11.30 pm. The society will be decorated with colourful lights. Children will dress up as Krishna and Radha.”

Sudarshan Apartments is another housing society in the name of Lord Krishna in IP Extension area. Subhash Dhanuka, a resident of the society, said, “We celebrate Krishna Janmashtami with dance and music and prayers. The society organises a little fair on the occasion."
