A cause for concern: Depleting groundwater levels in Ghaziabad

Summers are here and so is water crisis. Declining groundwater levels in the Trans-Hindon area of Ghaziabad is turning into a major problem for the city. Municipal colonies are already facing a shortage of water and civic authorities fear that tube wells may run out of drinking-water supply for colonies.

Municipal authorities are already on the lookout for places with adequate water levels. The waterworks department had earlier identified Tila Mor as having sufficient groundwater levels and had installed 16 tube wells there. Initially, they were able to draw 2,500 to 2,700 litres of water per minute from these, but the groundwater level here too has now depleted and the tube wells provide only 700 to 800 litres of water per minute.

Water shortage is gradually becoming a major issue in colonies such as Shalimar Garden, Rajendra Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Shyam Park and Janakpuri. Shalimar colony gets water supply just once a day.

RK Yadav, an engineer at the waterworks department, said, “The water level in the Tila Mor area has fallen to such an extent that we are not able to find water despite drilling 400 ft into the ground. This has forced the department to find new areas for placing tube wells.”

We can't stress enough the importance of identifying these spots soon.
