MDI flyover might just spell more snarls for residents! The MDI flyover

The recently inaugurated MDI flyover — a Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) project meant to improve traffic between Sector 14 and Sukhrali — has evoked more scepticism than cheers.

The flyover, constructed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has already logged a cost of Rs 129 crore. But its effectiveness in reducing traffic is highly questionable. In fact, most feel, it will cause major snarls towards Sukhrali Road.

Vehicles will speed down the flyover from Sector 14 towards Sukhrali, and most residents predict there will be a bottleneck right where the flyover ends.

Sukhrali Road is narrow and can’t accommodate even two car lanes at present. Plus, the market in the area is always crowded and there's encroachment on the sides as well, posing further threat for speeding vehicles coming down the flyover.

“MCG should have first removed encroachments on either side to create more space, and then started the project. Residents of Sector 17C will always face huge jams on this road, and we are really apprehensive,” complained Rajesh Sehrawat, a resident of Sector 17C.

Speaking on the issue, MCG official SS Rohilla said, “We are aware of the issue. We’ll certainly make sure the encroachments are removed."

The oversight on the part of the authorities has left residents fuming.

DS Yadav, RWA president of Sector 17B, added, “They should have constructed the flyover from Atul Kataria Chowk towards Signature Tower. The flow of traffic is heavy in this direction, as thousands of commuters from Old Gurgaon head towards Huda City Centre and Rajiv Chowk. Even the direction was not given much thought while planning the flyover!”
