State-run oil marketing companies today inked an MOU with central PSU Energy Efficiency Services Ltd to that effect.
In a move that has been lauded by all residents, petrol pumps under state-run oil marketing companies, or OMCs, will now sell energy-efficient LED lights and ceiling fans at subsidised rates.
The OMCs and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) — a joint venture of public sector companies under the ministry of power — today inked an MOU to that effect.
So far, residents had to purchase energy-efficient bulbs, tubelights and ceiling fans at subsidised rates from power discom offices in the city, or get them at market prices from retail shops. But now, they will be available at petrol pumps of state-run Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum.
The bulbs and tubelights, costing Rs 70 and Rs 220 receptively, will carry a three-year warranty. A ceiling fan will cost Rs 1,200 and have a warranty of two and a half years. In case of any defect, the product can be exchanged from the petrol pump from where the purchase was initially made.
Lauding the move, Mohan Singh, a resident of Noida, said, “This is a great step by the government. It will certainly increase the availability of energy-saving lights and fans. We can make our purchases while refilling our cars — it’ll be time-saving for us. This move will save us visits to the discom offices.”
Anita Sharma, an officer with the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited-run petrol pump in Sector 51, Noida, said, “The pumps are bound to follow the orders from the company top brass. If they pass instructions to sell energy-efficient LED lights and ceiling fans, we’ll have to implement it.”
She added, “We already have a kiosk for cold drinks at the pump. Now we’ll extend the facility to LED lights and fans.”
Pramod Taragi, another resident of Noida, said, “I would go to the market to purchase these bulbs, but that won’t be necessary any more. I really appreciate the government move.”
