Gurgaon Action Plan, a Gurgaon-based NGO, has started an awareness campaign called Freedom From Plastic against the use of polyethene. Several RWAs of the city have joined the cause, which is also being backed by Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Red Cross Society of India.

Under the campaign, cloth bags made by inmates of Bhondsi jail and members of women's self-help groups will be sold at a discounted rate to polyethene bags. The campaign started with South City II and Sector 10A, where RWA presidents Neeraj Yadav and Ashwani Kumar encouraged residents to take a pledge to avoid using polyethene in any form.

“The campaign aims to replace all polythene bags with cloth or paper bags," said Gauri Sarin, the founder of Gurgaon Action Plan. "Segregation and composting of waste are also being promoted through the campaign.”

Even the vegetable vendors have started using paper bags instead of polyethene. “I always carry my own cotton bag when I am out to purchase something. Each small effort goes a long way in making a difference,” said Sheela Rathore, a resident of Rosewood City, Sector 50.

Speaking about the initiative, Nilesh Tandon, president of RWA Fresco, said, “Our residents do not use polyethene and plastic bags. We keep conducting drives to promote cloth and paper bags for the sake of the environment."
