Water crisis lands residents at commissioner’s doorstep Delegates of RWA Federation of Ghaziabad presenting a memo to Municipal Commissioner

Residents of Vijay Nagar of Ghaziabad is grappling with the issue of poor quality of drinking water for quite some time now. When all other avenues failed to redress their grievance, a delegation of RWA Federation of Ghaziabad on Tuesday approached Municipal Commissioner Abdul Samad.

Led by its chairman, Col (Retd) TP Tyagi, the federation handed a memorandum to the commissioner. It draws the civic body’s attention to the woes of the residents who are made to drink the water unfit for human consumption.

Samples of drinking water collected from the locality have failed quality test. The total dissolved solids (TDS) level of the water is much higher than 500 ppm, the upper limit fixed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Yet the civic body did nothing to improve the quality.

The commissioner directed concerned officials to look into the complaint of the federation and find a solution to their problem.

Tyagi also drew the attention of the authorities towards the alarming levels to which groundwater is depleting. The water table has gone so low that bore wells have stopped working. He said if the problem is not addressed now, the residents will be facing acute water crisis in days to come.

The delegation also raised the issue of poor quality of dustbins installed in different parts of the city. The 2,200 dustbins, procured by Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) recently, gave in and are rendered unusable in a short span of time.
