Noida Sector 14 may soon get its very own dog shelter.

RWA representatives and a team from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Noida, met Noida Authority officials to request them to help build a shelter for the sector’s street dogs. This was the second such meeting in the week.

The shelter, if given the go-ahead, will come up on Plot No C-62 of the sector, about 350 sq m of land currently lying vacant. The plot was allotted to an individual for residential purposes many years back, but was cancelled by Noida Authority because of non-payment of land dues.

The RWA and SPCA team has come up with a budget of Rs 33 lakh for the construction of the dog shelter on this plot. Both the RWA and the SPCA have agreed to contribute money for this initiative and have also requested Noida Authority to pitch in.

The RWA will be responsible for feeding the dogs and the SPCA will monitor the shelter regularly.

Anuradha Singh, a member of SPCA Noida, said the animal-welfare organisation was trying to build a number of dog shelters in Noida.

Sakhi Sasiprabhu, president of the Sector 14 RWA, told City Spidey that once the dog shelter was up and running, they would hire a veterinary doctor to take care of old and ailing dogs.

At a time when dogs are increasingly being viewed as a menace to be culled and controlled, rather than as man’s best friend, it is heartening to see a few take steps towards a more inclusive society.
