To ease congestion at Kherki Dhaula toll on NH 8, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has designated two lanes at the plaza as FASTag lanes.
These two lanes — 3 and 17 — will operate on the RFID (Radio frequency identification) system.
The system is similar to that of a prepaid phone card. A vehicle will be issued a radio frequency tag that is fixed to the windshield. An RFID reader will act as a sensor to pick up the radio frequency ID. It will verify the tag’s validity and account balance. If there’s any discrepancy in terms of the balance amount or validity, the vehicle will be alerted to eject from the lane. Otherwise, it can pass without stopping.
Non-FASTag vehicles are prohibited from entering into the designated lanes. However, there’s a 15-day trial period first. Commuters will be informed of the end of the trial period.
Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Rewari who travels to Gurgaon frequently, said, “Despite having a prepaid account I had to wait in long lines. That’s not fair. We had prepaid accounts to move faster — not to get stuck. With tag lanes, I hope we can travel smoothly.”
One big advantage of tag lines is the faster movement for ambulances. The district administration has informed the NHAI authorities to let ambulances pass through tag lanes.
“Any vehicle having a Fast tag will be able to cross any toll of NHAI in the country, and we have tag lines — even if one — at all tolls we built,” confirmed Ashok Sharma, project director, NHAI.
