Gurgaon: Highways to come under high-tech surveillance soon!

After leveraging high-end technology to make the city safer and better, the Gurgaon administration plans to instal Wi-Fi on NH8 and MG Road, two of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. Fibre optic cables have already been laid on the highway roads.

These routes shall also come under the surveillance of software that can read numbers and check speed limits. This high-tech surveillance and connectivity project has been initiated by Gurgaon Police in association with MCG to improve the traffic situation and prevent crimes on the highway.

The software shall also accommodate high-speed cameras, which will be used for traffic management. With an ability to record number plates, the software will assist in identifying traffic violations and providing requisite footage in case of accidents. The software is expected to be installed and operational within three to four months.

“There are so many accidents on the highways, particularly hit-and-run cases. Usually, the vehicles cannot be traced and hence the system cannot book the offenders,” said Dhruv Malhotra, a resident of DLF Phase 2.

One of the most relevant aspects of this software will be traffic updates, which will be provided to commuters. Sources have informed that there will be display screens alongside the highway to update commuters about jams.

Speaking to City Spidey, DCP Traffic, Simardeep Singh, said, “We shall be installing the software from the Gurgaon border till Rewari. With the help of these IT-enabled services, we shall be able to easily track down defaulters and help solve hit-and-run cases. Any vehicle that enters and leaves NH8 will be caught on camera. Moreover, this software shall help trace a vehicle and identify the people sitting inside it. Therefore criminals will now have a hard time.”
