The way out of urban hunger... Volunteers with the initiative Sanjhi Roti

To deal with the crisis of urban hunger and food shortage, residents and RWAs of trans-Hindon high-rises have started collecting and distributing surplus food from societies.

The drive, christened Sanjhi Roti, is happening on weekends at the moment, but plans are on to make it a week-long affair.

Yash Chadda, a resident of Ram Prastha Greens in Vaishali, and one of the campaigners, told City Spidey , “A significant portion of Indian population sleeps hungry. So, we started this initiative to deliver the extra food to the needy. On the first day of the drive, we collected dozens of food packets, which were later distributed among the slum dwellers in our area.”

While the initiative kickstarted in Kautilya Apartments in Vasundhara, Niho Scottish Gardens and Jaipuria Sunrise Greens in Indirapuram, discussions are on to draw in other societies.

Willing residents can pack a few rotis and a dry preparation of vegetables in aluminum foil and drop the packed food in a collection box set up at the entry gate of their society. The food is either picked up by the volunteers to be distributed later or given out right at the gates by society residents.

“We have placed a cartons (large paper boxes) at the entry gate of our society. Residents can drop the food there , which will be later distributed to the needy. We are conducting the drive only on weekends as of now,” said DK Maurya, AOA president of Niho Scottish Gardens.
