Great news for GreNo: Metro link to IGI Airport soon!

Greater Noida residents, here is something to cheer about. Soon a Metro link will run from Greater Noida to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The Ministry of Urban Development has asked the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to jointly put forward a proposal for a high-speed Metro line between Greater Noida and IGI Airport. The state governments have also been asked to prepare a detailed project report for it.

The decision was conveyed to officials of the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC) in a meeting convened by the urban development ministry on Tuesday.

Deepak Agarwal, CEO of GNIDA, said, "The alignment of the track and the mode of funding for the corridor will have to be worked out jointly by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. DMICDC will write to both the state governments about this before another meeting with the ministry can be set up. Since Delhi Metro Rail Corporation [DMRC] has experience in constructing Metro tracks in both states, we are likely to hire its services for the project. This corridor is expected to be integrated with DMRC's existing Metro network."

Lokesh Kumar, a resident of Delta I sector of Greater Noida, said, “I take flights from IGI Airport at least thrice a week. At present, travelling to IGI Airport is time-taking and cumbersome. The new Metro link will indeed be a huge relief to frequent flyers.”

President of Greater Noida Resident Welfare Association, Elam Singh Nagar, said, “There are many people from Greater Noida who go to work in Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad. They have to switch between buses, autos and other modes of conveyance to reach their destination. The Metro link will be a boon for them.”

Here are a few highlights of the soon-to-be-proposed Metro link:

  1. Residents of Greater Noida will be able to reach IGI Airport in just 55 minutes.
  2. The Metro is expected to run at a speed of 160 kmph and will cover a distance of 52.9 km.
  3. With only five or six stops on its route, the Metro link may include areas such as Bodaki and Pari Chowk in Greater Noida, Noida Metro stations, Mayur Vihar Phase I and Tughlakabad in Delhi, and Aerocity at IGI Airport.
