Trees once, stumps now

The only step Greater Noida Authority has taken is issuing notices to those felling trees in the area.

Trees once, stumps now This was a green patch not so long ago

Green Greater Noida, Clean Greater Noida. The slogan coined for the city by Greater Noida Authority seems to have gone for a six. This is evident from the rate at which trees are being felled here, in some cases with the connivance of Authority officials.

In the past one and a half months, the horticulture department of the Authority has issued notices to 80 persons for cutting trees. But this seems to be a mere formality. No further action has been initiated against any of the accused.

Despite these notices, tree felling is going on unhindered in the city.

Prakash Sharma, a resident of Sector 36, told City Spidey that some people in his sector who are felling trees have procured permission only to prune them. He has informed the RWA, which has forwarded the complaint to the Authority, but no action has been taken.

President of Greater Noida RWAs, Elam Singh Nagar, said he has forwarded various complaints received from different sectors, but Authority officials have not even taken cognisance of the offence.

When contacted by City Spidey, senior manager of the Authority Anand Mohan Singh confirmed that 80 persons had been issued notices. However, he did not talk about the action taken against them.

When prodded further, Singh changed the topic by giving details about the tree-planting drive his department is going to launch in Greater Noida.
