Rail Vihar, a residential society in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, has taken up a pro-green plan to supply power for electricity utilities of common areas within the society. The RWA of the society has installed solar panels on the terrace of one of its towers with a capacity of 25 kW.
The electricity generated from the panels is set to cut down on the monthly consumption of the streetlights and other common-area amenities of the society.
The 52 panels, installed at a cost of over Rs 19 lakh, are arranged in four rows.
Speaking to City Spidey, RWA members of the society said that according to initial estimates, the panels should offer savings worth Rs 1.25 lakh in the monthly electricity bills of the society. However, the members maintained that the entire project is a trial run, and will be explored further depending on its success. “The process had begun six months back, and was put in motion only a week back. We were discussing among ourselves about the project, and finally set the ball rolling,” said Atul Shrivastava, an RWA member of the society.
Interestingly, several high-rises in Indirapuram have been planning to opt for renewable green energy sources, but have failed so far due to absence of sufficient open space for installing the panels. However, Rail Vihar, being a low-rise society with several rooftops spread across a wide area, found solar panels to be a viable alternative to their daily power requirements.
“As of now, the panels are generating an average of 70 units per day. We shall wait till the end of the month to get a full report on the benefits,” Shrivastav further added.
