Agrasen Awas, East Delhi: Oil transformers in basement pose a life threat

The managing committee of Agrasen Awas, a six storied co-operative group housing society in IP Extension, has again written to BSES Yamuna Power Limited Company, requesting it to transfer the oil transformers from the basement of the society to an open space.

Four such transformers, with a capacity of 11,000 volts installed at the society basement, have become a cause of concern for the ground-floor residents. The constant sound, they complain, has made life difficult for them.

This is not the first time that the society’s managing committee has asked the power company to shift the transformers. In fact, BSES had replied to the earlier letter. In it, the power company had given two options to the society — either provide an open space to shift the transformers or change the oil transformers with dry ones.

The letter read: “Oil-filled transformers can be replaced with dry transformers, and the additional cost for will be shared by both BSES and the society equally.” It further said that if the society wanted to shift them from the basement to an open space, the committee would need to bear the additional cost for shifting.

Umesh Gupta, a resident of the society, said, “Our committee tried hard to find a place outside the society, but the MCD did not allow us. Therefore, we decided to shift these transformers from the basement to an open place within the society. We have enough space. But the BSES should tell us how much the transfer will cost.”

He added, “These transformers are a life threat. Residents normally park their vehicles close to these transformers — and it can prove fatal any day.”
