Gurgaon: Any guesses why HUDA market looks way cleaner now?

What do residents of sectors 56 and 57, Gurgaon, do on their weekends? Clean up their surroundings!

And their efforts are showing. The HUDA market, which used to be a sore sight with garbage all around, now looks way cleaner. The pavements, colony lanes — all sport a better look these days.

Under the initiative and encouragement of Mahesh Dayma, a former councillor and an active resident, people have formed various groups and allocated areas among themselves. And on Saturdays, they get down to cleaning their respective areas.

“The prime minister’s vision of cleanliness has indeed inspired us. We all feel proud to see our sector clean,” confessed Vikram Mathur, a resident of Devinder Vihar.

The groups not only clean the areas, but also educate people on maintaining basic cleanliness.

“We have kept dustbins at various places in the market and along the pavement. The moment you start treating the colony as an extension of your home, you will not feel burdened to clean it,” said Dayma.
