Despite regular fumigation drives, checking mosquito breeding is proving to be a problem in the city.
Despite Gurgaon having received less rainfall this year, the city has recorded as many as 273 cases of malaria till now — the highest in the past five years.
Doctors are calling the number of malaria cases “alarming”. “The government is trying to make the city malaria-free by 2020, but the rate at which things are going, it seems a tough target to achieve. Malaria cases can be fatal if not treated on time,” said BK Rajora, Chief Medical Officer, Civil Hospital.
Even though the authorities have been carrying out regular fogging drives, there are areas where mosquito breeding is increasing.
Speaking to City Spidey, Ritu Mathur, a resident of Sector 56, said, “We have regular fogging in our area, but there have been malaria cases reported from here as well.”
The symptoms of malaria are usually fever, headache and shivering. Pregnant women, children and HIV patients are the most vulnerable. As per statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), almost 70 per cent of malaria deaths occur in infants and toddlers.
