Can parking rules be enforced by civic bodies in residential areas without securing the approval of the RWAs? Obviously not. This is exactly why the revised parking policy of the Delhi Government is now delayed in terms of implementation.
A four member committee that has been working out the nitty gritties of the new parking rules has proposed to levy charges for parking in residential colonies. This has been strongly and unanimously opposed by the RWAs representatives. Therefore, to avoid any further conflict, the state government has decided to solicit the views of the RWAs. This decision has been taken by the Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot.
Incidentally the RWAs had already given a set of macro suggestions in terms of the new policy. “We shall make the draft of the new parking policy in the next two weeks,” Gahlot informed during the course of a press conference that was held at the Secretariat today.
As things stand now, civic bodies shall ensure the implementation of the revised parking rules in residential areas. Municipal corporations on the other hand, shall be authorised to impose fines on violators. Parking charges in residential colonies will be finalised by civic agencies consulting with local RWAs.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has directed the civic bodies to set up a team that would consult the RWAs in terms of finalising the residential parking rules.
