Civic authorities are gearing up for Chhat Puja, and with arrangements to handle the rush of devotees at the different ghats on October 26.

Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation and a resident of Dwarka Kamaljeet Sehrawat told City Spidey that the ghats in the area would be lit up. Adequate medical facilities will be stationed for devotees. The corporation is in touch with community leaders on steps to be taken for the comfort of devotees.

“I have instructed the officers concerned to ensure sanitation, instal high mast lights, undertake repairs, develop greenery and provide health services during Chhat Puja celebrations,” Sehrawat said. All arrangements will be in place before the end of next week, she said.

The mayor also visited several ghats. Local area MP Pradesh Verma was also part of the inspection team, with municipal corporation officials in tow.

They held talks with the officials, as also with community representatives about steps to be taken for improving the facilities and ensuring a safe environment for devotees. The mayor welcomed any constructive suggestions that would help make puja celebrations incident-free.

“We are making efforts and are open to suggestions, if any, from people. We will work on the suggestions that are practical,” she said.

In Dwarka the puja is organised on a large scale at ghats such as Dada Dev Mandir, Sector 8 park, Dabri, Sector 10 and Kakrola. Apart from that in many areas in West Delhi and South West Delhi the puja is organised by community people from Uttar Pradesh.

General secretary of the Palam Chhat Puja Samiti, Amrendra Singh, said there was still a lot of work to be done at ghats such as the one in Sector 8. “We have given a letter to the mayor for some work. Her visits to the ghats is a welcome move, and we hope everything assured by her will be carried out at the Chhat Ghat,” Singh said.
